January

PENNYHITCH

Saturday 18th January
Meet at 10:00 am at the gates to the Gower Show ground (opposite Penrice Home Farm) for approximately 4.5 miles circular walk to Oxwich via Pennyhitch and Penrice Church returning along the Marsh road, the Towers and Perriswood. It's "on road" all the way with no muddy patches. The details are taken from "Ten Walks In Gower" by Stephen Lee, one of the Society's founders.

Gower Coast Path 6: Whiteford Point

Saturday 25th January
Meet 10:00 am at Cwm Ivy Car Park (SA3 1DE, SS 4396 9351).  A circular walk around Whiteford Nature Reserve.  Part 6 of a series of 17 walks around the entire Gower section of the Wales Coast Path.  A leisurely 5 mile walk with approximately 300ft of total ascent, returning by 1:30pm.

CEFN BRYN AND A SINK HOLE

Saturday 1st February
Meet at 10:00 am at Penmaen Rose Cottage car park GR SS 526884 for a moderate 8 mile/12km walk over Cefn Bryn to visit the huge Moormills sink hole near Broad Pool.

CWM CLYDACH

Saturday 8th February
Meet at 10:30 am at the car park for Cwm Clydach RSPB reserve, Lone Road, Clydach SA6 5SU (Grid Ref. SN 682 026).  The walk explores the wooded valley of Cwm Clydach, and the surrounding upland pastures.  We will pass the remote Gellionnen Chapel, the oldest nonconformist chapel in the area.  The walk will be approximately 5 miles.

TAF FECHAN SKYLINE

(Joint with Swansea Ramblers)
Sunday 9th February
Meet at 9:00am between Guildhall and Victoria Park (GR SS 643 923) or 10:00am Brecon Beacons: Neuadd Forestry Commission Car Park (GR SO 037 169).
This circular walk along the Taf Fechan skyline encompasses the summits of Cribyn, Pen Y Fan and Corn Du, plus a fine escarpment above the Taf Fechan Valley A strenuous 9 mile walk.

Gower Coast Path 7: Cwm Ivy to Hill End

Saturday 15th February
Meet 10:00 am at Cwm Ivy Car Park (SA3 1DE, SS 4396 9351).  A circular walk from Cwm Ivy to Hill End passing Hill Tor and Bluepool on the coast path and returning through Llangennith and around Llanmadoc Hill.  Part 7 of a series of 17 walks around the entire Gower section of the Wales Coast Path.  A moderate 7.5 mile walk with approximately 1000ft of total ascent, returning by 3:30pm.

Llanmadoc

Saturday 22nd February
Meet at 10:30 am at Cwm Ivy car park (honesty box) GR SS 440 935 for a 7 mile moderate walk.  This is a figure of 8 walk via Llanmadoc, Broughton Beach, Burry Holms and around Llanmadoc Hill with stunning views.

SURVIVAL SPECIAL

Saturday 22nd February
Gower Society Outdoor Ed activity
Meet 2:00pm Millwood, Penrice, (Grid Ref: 493 882).
Directions: Follow A4118 towards Port Eynon.  Take the turning for Penrice just after the turning for Oxwich.  Go down the hill and park on the right in the lay-by for Mill wood.  We will be going through the gate with the carving of an owl and a squirrel.
How good are you at surviving in the woods? Follow clues into the woods.  Learn some basic survival skills. Can you build a shelter, light a fire, find water and cook food on the fire?
Suitable for families. Older children can have a go at more advanced skills.
The activity lasts approximately 2 hours.

LLANDEILO TO LLANGADOG

(Joint with Swansea Ramblers)
Sunday 23rd February
Meet at 9:15am Llandeilo Station Car Park (GR SN 633 226).
From Llandeilo we use lanes and paths, passing near Carreg Cennen Castle, then join the Beacons Way to the Garn Goch Iron Age fort. We descend to Llangadog for a meal at the Goose and Cuckoo (but check with the leader first). The last train is 7p.m. so this walk will not be a stroll. Bring money, bus pass and dry clothes if rain is likely. A strenuous 12.5 mile walk with approximately 1400ft (427m) of total ascent.

LLANDOVERY AND MYDDFAI

Saturday 29th February
Catch the Heart of Wales train from Swansea at 9:15am or Gowerton at 9:26am (later stations could be busy. We hope that concessionary travel on the train will continue so bring your bus pass. For those without a pass, groups of 4 or more can buy a group day return).  A moderate 7 mile walk from Llandovery through woodlands and valleys to Myddfai where hot drinks can be bought – but bring a packed lunch.  Return by a different route in time for tea at the Llandovery Station café and the 4:36pm train home.  Check train details nearer the date but don’t use the Heart of Wales website, it is often out of date.

Gower Coast Path 8: Hill End to Mewslade

Saturday 7th March
Meet 10:00 am at Saint Mary's church car park in Rhossili (SA3 1PP, SS 4143 8806). A circular walk covering Hill End to Mewslade on the coastal path passing Fall Bay, Middleton and skirting around Rhossili Down.  Part 8 of a series of 17 walks around the entire Gower section of the Wales Coast Path.  A moderate 7 mile walk with approximately 800ft of total ascent, returning by 3:00pm.

DARE VALLEY AND THE RHIGOS

Sunday 8th March
Meet at 9:00am between Guildhall and Victoria Park (GR SS 643 923) or 10:00am Dare Valley Country Park Visitor Centre (GR SN 985 026).
A walk on mountain and moorland with fine views over the Dare and Neath Valleys and up to the Beacons. A strenuous 11 mile walk with approximately 1400ft (427m) of total ascent..

Meet at 10:00 am Crofty play ground at the marsh (SS 533 957) for 3 hour inland tour involving some climbing but rewarded by views of the estuary and beyond.

GOWER ALPS

(Joint with Swansea Ramblers)
Sunday 22nd March
Meet at 9:30am Reynoldston: Park on the road to the Post Office, north of the King Arthur (GR SS 482 901).
Taking in Cefn Bryn, Ryers Down, Llanmadoc Hill, Hardings Down and Rhossili Down. No climbing ropes needed but lots of mild ups and downs! A strenuous 13 mile walk.

Gower Coast Path 9: Mewslade to Overton

Saturday 28th March
Meet 10:00 am on the side of the road to Pilton Green Farm (SA3 1PE, SS 4466 8714).  A circular walk covering Mewslade to Overton on the coastal path. Passing Ramsgrove,  The Knave and a number of promontory forts before heading inland at Overton.  Part 9 of a series of 17 walks around the entire Gower section of the Wales Coast Path.  A moderate 7 mile walk with approximately 700ft of total ascent, returning by 3:00pm.
