GOWER SOCIETY YOUTH GRANTS 2019
This year we were given separate budgets for Transport grants (£2000) and Project grants (£5000). We gave seven Transport grants to cover the use of coaches going to field trips, run by Dawn Thomas, on Gower and at Crymlyn Bog for those schools whose parents couldn’t afford to pay these costs themselves. All these schools were very grateful to receive this help as without it the children wouldn’t have been able to go to appreciate the natural world of Gower and its surrounds.
Eight project grants were given to schools and other organisations working with young people. Many were to enhance the school’s natural environment either indirectly e.g. by growing plants in poly tunnels for which grants were given, so that they could be planted out as early as possible or directly by developing or improving woodland areas, ponds and wildlife areas. All this encourages outdoor learning and sustainability awareness. The young people learn to grow, cook and eat their own vegetables and fruit and use these skills for sustainability in the future.
During the summer term 2019 all the schools, apart from one, which received a grant in 2018 were visited by a member of the Gower Society Youth sub-committee and presented with a personalised certificate to be displayed in the school. By this time all of the projects had been completed so committee members were able to see the finished results. The certificates will be more prominent than plaques placed outside as they can be displayed inside the school where they can be seen by parents and visitors. This should give positive publicity for the Gower Society. The remaining school from 2018 and the schools which received a grant in 2019 will be visited during 2020.
