Folk dancing is cancelled at present due to the pandemic.  When restrictions are lifted and we are able to meet safely, we hope to resume our regular sessions (January 2021)

The Gower Society’s folk dancing group is flourishing at the moment with almost thirty enthusiastic participants on its books.  They meet every other Thursday at seven o’clock at Rear Hall, Uniting Church Sketty, Dillwyn Road, Sketty, Swansea, SA2 9AH.

Waiting for the music to begin

Dancing usually goes on until eight o’clock when everyone stops for a well earned rest, a cup of tea/coffee, biscuits/cake and a chat before dancing once again with renewed vigour until  around nine o’clock.

Burns Night

The dances vary in difficulty, so we usually begin with the easy ones and move on to the ‘brain stretchers’ as the evening progresses.  We have found over sixty different dances to try out so far including Mairi’s Wedding and Wind on Loch Fyne from Scotland,  Gower Reel and Y Delyn Newydd from Wales,  English dances such as Blaydon Races and Leaving of Liverpool and we also try dances from further afield that include Belfast Duck, Trip to Bavaria, Yellow Rose of Texas and the Romanian dance Alunelul.  Absolutely no previous experience is necessary as all dances are walked through, practised and then ‘called’ with the music.  The music is always lively and many of the tunes are very familiar.  Our dancers take part in as many or as few of the dances as they want on a particular evening, but I do warn you once you start it is difficult to sit out.

"Long Set" ready for action

We are a very friendly group and always extend a warm welcome to new participants.  So if you’re looking for something different or a bit of cheering up during the long, dark winter months, why not come along and just give it a try – you’ll be surprised how much fun and exercise for both brain and body you’ll get and you could find that once you start it’s very difficult to stop!

An enthusiastic start
