GSYA Programme

Gower Society Youth Action. Our aim is to encourage young people living in or visiting The Lordship of Gower to enjoy, understand and enhance the natural environment.

Gower Society Youth (GSY) membership provides a programme of free activities and newsletters for children and their responsible adults.

Please note that for all the following listed young people’s events, that the young people must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult. All the events are organised and led by Dawn Thomas – a most experienced leader and communicator.

Saturday 21st April,  RIVER AND CASTLE 
Meet 2:00 pm at Parkmill Shepherds shop car park.  SA3 2EH.
Directions: Follow the South Gower Road A4118 to Parkmill.  Park in the Shepherd’s car park or if full park in the Heritage Centre car park. There is a charge.
Discover the stories of Pennard castle and explore Pennard river.  We will walk down next to the river looking at all the meanders.  Then do some fishing at the mouth.  We will then climb up to the castle, explore the remains and hear the legend of Pennard castle. 
Suitable for families with children. The activity will finish at approximately 4pm.

Monday 7th May, MAY DAY FETE
Meet 2:00pm, Reynoldston Lower Green SA3 1AB
Directions:  Follow the B4271 over Cefn Bryn down the hill into Reynoldston.  After the narrow bit turn right to the Lower Green.  There is parking outside the village hall – follow the road past the church round to the right, and outside the church.  
There will be maypole dancing, Morris dancing, crowning of the May queen and traditional games all on Reynoldston green.  Also as usual a selection of Gower foraged refreshments.  Bring a picnic and your family. Suitable for families with children. The activity will finish at approximately 4pm.

Saturday 16th June, FATHER’S DAY FISHING TRIP
Meet 2:00pm in Port Eynon
Directions: Follow A4118 South Gower road to its very end.  Park in the car park –pay and display, and meet by the wall on the beach front.
In this year of the sea and on father’s day why not spend some time with your father or family trying to fish, or just listen to the waves and explore rock pools.

Saturday 21st July, MINI-BEAST HUNT
Meet 2:00pm, on the top of Cefn Bryn, Reynoldston.
Directions: From Killay go onto Gower across the cattle grid.  Take the first right and then continue past the garage.  After the cattle grid take the left turn up the B4271 up Cefn Bryn.  At the top of the hill turn right off the road onto car park.
Explore the heathland and ponds of Cefn Bryn and the mini beasts living there.  Come and see the amazing pond life, bush crickets and grasshoppers living in the habitats.  Use butterfly nets and fishing nets to catch these beautiful animals and look closely at them using magnifying glasses.

Saturday 22nd – Sunday 23rd September, AN INTRODUCTION TO CAMPING
Meet 10:00am Parc le Breos Campsite car park. SA3 2HA
Directions:  Follow the signs to Parc le Breos Trekking centre at Parkmill.  Pass the car park for the Heritage Centre and follow the road for ¾ of a km.  On your left is the car park opposite some large pine tree and a gate.  We will be camping on the shed site, same place as last year, just through the fence adjoining the car park. Not up the valley of Green Cwm.  
Start to set up tents in the field which sides onto the car park from 10.00 am.
The family camp will take place at Parc le Breos scout camp running from 10.00 am on Saturday 22nd September until 12.00 noon on Sunday 23rd September.  This event requires booking in advance so please contact me for a kit list, you will need to bring your own tents.  We do have access to some for borrowing if anyone needs one, and parents will have to stay.  
Learn how to set up a tent, cook on an open fire, camp craft and fun and games outdoors with other families.  Camping costs £3 per person, booking required.  Open to all children who wish to camp with their families.
