Gower Society Youth Action. Our aim is to encourage young people living in or visiting The Lordship of Gower to enjoy, understand and enhance the natural environment.

Gower Society Youth (GSY) membership provides a programme of free activities and newsletters for children and their responsible adults.

Please note that for all the following listed young people’s events, that the young people must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult. All the events are organised and led by Dawn Thomas – a most experienced leader and communicator.

Sat 14th Oct 2017 History of Mumbles Hill.
Meet 2.00 p.m. at The Big Apple car park Mumbles.
Directions: Follow Oystermouth Road out of Swansea towards Mumbles. Drive through Mumbles and along the coast until you go through a high cutting in the rock. As you exit this turn left into the Big Apple car park. There is a charge. There is also a car park a little way further along above Bracelet Bay.
We will climb up to the Nature Reserve and explore all the WW II remains and history hidden in the hill. Learn about the strategic position of Mumbles Hill and what historic buildings are still visible. We will also look for wildlife in this unique nature reserve.

Directions: Follow the A4118 past Parkmill. The Car Park is on the left at the top of the hill. Penmaen Hall is through the gate which says “Private no parking”. If the car park is full we also are allowed to park through the gate on the grassed area opposite the houses of Tor View. It must be against the hedge bordering the road.
Get in the festive mood with this Christmas craft session. Masses of craft materials will be available for you to make Christmas cards, decorations and let the festive juices flow. Relax to the sound of Christmas music with mulled wine and mince pies.

Saturday 17th February 2018, Bird watching and painting
Meet 2pm-4pm at Llanrhidian Marsh.  SA4 3TR
Directions: From the north Gower road B4295 from Crofty.  Take the right turn, sign posted to Wernffrwd.  Follow the road until you reach the T-junction with the marsh road.  There is a parking lay-by just on the right as you get on the marsh road opposite St David’s church.  Or follow the marsh road from Crofty until you reach the large lay-by on the right opposite St David’s church. We will explore this wild landscape looking for any over wintering wading birds and immerse ourselves in the vast expanse of emptiness by following the creeks, dipping in the pools and doing some painting of the landscape.  Bring binoculars if you have any.

Saturday 17th March 2018, Fossil hunting and geology
Meet 12pm-2pm at Rotherslade beach.  SA3 4QW
Directions: Park on the side of the road down to Rotherslade Bay or if you feeling energetic park in Langland Bay and walk around on the coast path. Grid Ref: 610 873
A little earlier than usual to catch the low tide, meet Dawn Thomas of Nature Days at the bottom of the steps down to the beach at Rotherslade.  Learn how fossils are made and then explore the rocks looking for real fossils.  We will take rubbings of any we find and identify how old they are.  You will then be able to make your own fossil out of plaster of Paris to take home.
