Gower Society Youth Action. Our aim is to encourage young people living in or visiting The Lordship of Gower to enjoy, understand and enhance the natural environment.

Gower Society Youth (GSY) membership provides a programme of free activities and newsletters for children and their responsible adults.

Please note that for all the following listed young people’s events, that the young people must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult. All the events are organised and led by Dawn Thomas – a most experienced leader and communicator.

Sat 18th March The stories Behind the Stones – St. George ‘s Graveyard.
Meet at  2:00pm at St George’s Church Reynoldston. SA3 1AA
Directions:
Follow North Gower Road until turn off over Cefn Bryn. Take left turn after cattle grid over Cefn Bryn. Go downhill into Reynoldston village. After the narrow section just before the lower green turn right. Follow road past church on the right and round the corner past the fire station. Parking alongside the church wall opposite the church or outside the village hall.
Hopefully with the help of local expert Hugh Jones we will travel around the graveyard finding the stories behind the stones. Who was Bill the Bike!  And the incredible stories behind the families lying to rest outside the old Gower church.  Explore inside the church the stained glass windows and fixtures of this old building. There will be a quiz, treasure hunt and craft activities to keep you busy and entertained.

Sun 23rd April 2017 Coastal Foraging Foray.
MEET 10am – 12pm Port Eynon beach front SA3 1NN Look for the flags.
Directions: Follow A4118 South Gower road to its very end. Park in the car park –pay and display, and meet by the wall on the beach front.
Foraging on the beach. Ever wondered what made those holes in the sand? We will be hunting for razor fish and cockles and other marine edibles. We will also be looking for other resources found on the coast. What can we make out of what is around us?

Mon 1st May 2017 May Day Fete.
MEET 2pm-4pm, Reynoldston Lower Green SA3 1AB
Directions: Follow the B4271 over Cefn Bryn down the hill into Reynoldston. After the narrow bit turn right to the lower Green. There is parking outside the village hall – follow the road past the church round to the right, and outside the church.
There will be maypole dancing, Morris dancing, crowning of the May queen and traditional games all on Reynoldston green. Also as usual a selection of Gower foraged refreshments. Bring a picnic and your family.

Sat 3rd June 2017 Beach Boyard Ultimate Challenge.
MEET at 2pm – 4pm, Swansea beach across the cycle track behind the car park at the bottom of Sketty lane.

Crystal maze, Raven, Fort Boyard call it what you like it is fun! We will be reenacting some of the team challenges from the TV series on our very own “Beach Boyard”. Have a go at some fun team challenges including some wet ones! Bring spare clothes or bathers.

Sat 15th July 2017 Butterflies and Bush Crickets.
MEET at 2pm Oxwich NNR. Parking available in the field on the right of the marsh road before the main beach car park, look for the flag.
Directions: Follow the A4118 South Gower Road until the turning sign posted to Oxwich. Follow the road down the hill and across the marsh until you come to the field on the right failing which the beach car park on the left.
Come and see the amazing butterflies, bush crickets and grasshoppers living in the sand dunes at the back on Oxwich NNR. July is the perfect time to see Oxwich at its best. Use butterfly nets to catch these beautiful animals and look closely at them using magnifying glasses.

Sat 16th – Sun 17th Sept 2017 An Introduction to Camping.
MEET 10am Parc le Breos Campsite car park. SA3 2HA
Directions: Follow the signs to Parc le Breos Trekking centre at Parkmill. Pass the car park for the Heritage Centre and follow the road for ¾ of a km. On your left is the car park opposite some large pine tree and a gate. We will be camping on the shed site, same place as last year, just through the fence adjoining the car park. Not up the valley of Green Cwm.
Start to set up tents in the field which sides onto the car park from 10.00 am.
The family camp will take place at Parc le Breos scout camp running from 10.00 am on Saturday 27th September until 12.00 noon on Sunday 28th September. This event requires booking in advance so please contact me for a kit list, you will need to bring your own tents. We do have access to some for borrowing if anyone needs one, and parents will have to stay.
Learn how to set up a tent, cook on an open fire, camp craft and fun and games outdoors with other families. Camping costs £3 per person, booking required. Open to all who wish to camp with their families.

Sat 14th Oct 2017 History of Mumbles Hill.
Meet 2.00 p.m. at The Big Apple car park Mumbles.
Directions: Follow Oystermouth Road out of Swansea towards Mumbles. Drive through Mumbles and along the coast until you go through a high cutting in the rock. As you exit this turn left into the Big Apple car park. There is a charge. There is also a car park a little way further along above Bracelet Bay.
We will climb up to the Nature Reserve and explore all the WW II remains and history hidden in the hill. Learn about the strategic position of Mumbles Hill and what historic buildings are still visible. We will also look for wildlife in this unique nature reserve.

Directions: Follow the A4118 past Parkmill. The Car Park is on the left at the top of the hill. Penmaen Hall is through the gate which says “Private no parking”. If the car park is full we also are allowed to park through the gate on the grassed area opposite the houses of Tor View. It must be against the hedge bordering the road.
Get in the festive mood with this Christmas craft session. Masses of craft materials will be available for you to make Christmas cards, decorations and let the festive juices flow. Relax to the sound of Christmas music with mulled wine and mince pies.
